Maritime radio communication
Maritime radio is one of the oldest uses of radio communication. It serves the communication from ship
to ship as well as from ship to coast.
For a long time, short waves were used for maritime communication, mostly by means of Morse code telegraphy.
Today, satellite communication is preferred, as it does not need any specially trained operators.
Most of the traditional coastal stations have been closed down towards the end of the last century.
In Switzerland, there is still a coastal station active - Berna Radio with the call HEB. It offers
an email service over short wave for ships.
