Amateurradio
A worldwide network of 18 bacons
was established by radio amateurs in order to be
able to get a fast overview of the present propagation conditions on shortwaves.
In a 3 minutes interval, they transmit for a few seconds with a power of 100W, 10W, 1W and 0.1W.
They identify themselves with the their callsign in Morse code. Because of the precise time control,
they can also be identified just by the transmission time.
Because the higher frequency bands get open
only with increased solar activity (high number of sunspots),
the best chance to hear some bacons is on the 20m and 17m band.
20-m band bacons (14100 kHz ) ---
17-m band bacons (18110 kHz )
15-m band bacons (21150 kHz ) ---
12-m band bacons (24930 kHz )
10-m band bacons (28200 kHz )
The bacon DK0WCY near Flensburg transmits continuously updated data on the state of the ionosphere
and about the solar activity (sun spot number etc.).
30-m Band (10144 kHz )
60-m Band DRA5 (5195 kHz )
